You love a ring, and you buy it. Wrong? You love a ring; you research the designs; you measure your ring size; you check your budget, and then you go ahead with buying the model. All these factors are just the surface of buying a ring design. We’re sure some numerous other questions and doubts creep up on you when you’re diving into the world of precious jewellery items. While we cannot solve every problem for you, we can certainly help with overcoming one issue that everyone faces while ring jewellery shopping: measuring the ring size.
Although you would think why such a trivial subject be addressed at all, we assure you that buying a finger ring only comes out right when you shop the right size. One size smaller or one size bigger will ruin your chance of wearing this ring daily or even occasionally (if that is what you prefer). Moreover, why spend time on resizing the ring and changing its original design, when you can pick out the model that matches your finger size.
Why is it Important to Know Your Ring Size?
There are two reasons why you would need to measure the ring size; one is when you’re buying the finger ring for yourself, and second is when the jewellery is for your partner. Yes, in case you forgot, you would need to know the ring size of your partner if you’re planning to propose. Here are all the reasons why it is vital to know the ring size:
- To make sure that the ring is not one size small or more prominent than required
- To ensure that your to-be-partner is not left with a ring she cannot wear after she said yes
- To avoid buying prominently bigger size where the ring just disappears from the wearer’s finger because it was too big to stay
- To continue wearing the ring daily without changing its design or the appearance
Now, if you are still not serious about taking the ring size seriously, we can only predict that the proposal you’re planning could go haywire (although we wish it doesn’t).
Understand Your Ring Size
Now, you know why you need to determine correct ring size before buying a finger-ring. But do you know that the size of a finger or ring is measure in millimetres? Such a small unit of measurement is used to get a precise reading. Hence, even the ring sizes are available in the millimetres. Now, all for you left to do is match the size of the finger to the nearest size of the ring, and voila, you have a ring for yourself.
However, while rounding off to the nearest size, always pick the next bigger number. For instance, if the finger size is 17mm, round it off to 17.3mm and not 16.9mm. Subsequently, you need to match the finger size with the ring measurement, and you’ll have your ring design.
How to Determine Your Ring Size?
Here we arrive at the main question. Up until now, we were only learning about the finger size, but now we’ll list three ways of determining the ring size, at home or a jeweller’s place.
Tip 1: Use a String to Measure the Finger Size
- Find a floss, cloth strip, or a string and wrap it around the finger you would wear the ring on
- Do not make it tight, keep it a little lose as you want the ring to sit firmly yet gently on the finger
- Make use of a marker to highlight the place where two ends of the string meet while placed circled around your finger
- Now, take a ruler and place the string next to it. See the millimetre value at which the highlighted portion of the string stops
- Repeat the task at least three to four times before finalizing the size
- Avoid stretching the floss or the string as it may differ the size value
Tip 2: Use an Old Ring
- If you’re not able to perform the first option, be it for any reason, then go for this option
- All you need a ring of yours that you already use. Or if you want to measure your partner’s ring size, ask one her/his friends to help you out with fishing out their ring
- You can then take that ring to the jeweller who will measure the size using the apparatus at their disposal and tell you the measure
- All you need to make sure is the ring is of right-hand, not worn on thumb or any other finger except the ring finger
- It is also the safest and most accurate way of determining the size of a ring
Tip 3: Buy a Ring Sizing Kit
- If you want to be extra careful about the ring size, it is better to buy a sizing kit
- Usually, there are several types of ring sizing kit available in the market. While some contain sample rings, others contain a small measuring tape that easily wraps around the finger
- If you use the kit, it’ll work just like the string, but you’ll not have to place it against the ruler to measure the value. The sizing kit has value engraved on its surface
- Even with the kit, repeat the task at least three to four times before finalizing the size
- Avoid stretching the sizing kit surface as it may differ the size value
